"...I've often thought there needs to be a really decent survival-based game, like you have to cross a procedurally-generated desert while watching your food and water intake and finding shelter for each night. -- Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw--
I have to say that sounds like an awesome game. No guns or shooting yoru way to a stupid solution, but rather really tackling a hard problem that takes works and thinking to solve. Yet in aworld you cna explore are long as you wnat and as much as you want if you just keep yourself alive. Howevewr, I think a jungle would be better than a desert. Jungles hide things better and provide more variety.
The game should be equal parts traversal and item management since as you play, your thirst, hunger, energy, and sleep meters need to be watched. As you play and work your way through the jungle you have to plan the day smartly. Some spot will have so much food and water you cna explore easily, some sport you cna only explore if you measure each step and every ounce you drink & eat.
Therfore, playing is about planning too. It is about trying different solutions to the obstacles you find. In addition, you as the player have to notice where the sun is in the sky to tell direction and time of day. You CAN get yourself lost. The game will help you with hints about telling time and direction, but you have to put the knowledge to work. The game gives you tools along the way, but undertsnding them might take playing and guessing.
Every game needs a deus ex machina too. This is the save system and the save your butt system. In the game, there will be a mysterious form. When you get in trouble: like run out of food, fall in a pit, etc the mysterious being (whatever it is) brings you back to various safe areas. If you are, doing very well the mysterious visitor might help you in subtle ways, not necessities, but presents jewelry, ornaments, and special gifts. In this way player are encouraged to play very well instead of slacking off. Playing badly will not kill you, but it will mean not getting the gifts. The story of who & what they mysterious form is will be part of the plot & story of the game.
As much as possible the game is a HUGE sandbox. However, unlike other open world game it as much as possible a working world where your actions matter and things are happening. Just as if you were in a real jungle, you will need to decide how to be safe and when to take a risk. Yet, like a game, you have the mysterious being to keep the game going, to provide help, and to provide rewards. Along the way, YOU WILL see wondrous things. The more you explore the more you will see and you will see lost cities that can be explored. Downed WW 2 aircraft with their own mysterious. Amazing animals and even animals nobody has seen.
