What will happen to the Japanese game development scene over the next decade?
Will it start to gain ground again as developers gain ground on tech that isn't changing as fast?
Will it lose ground as development in N. American, Europe, and Asia gains even more ground?
Will the success or failure of Wii U be a touchstone to what happens?
I think you could make arguments for all of those...but what do you think?
WHAT I THINK? I think the era of Japan’s development community being the most influential is over. They will have a seat at the table, but it will be seat number three of four. In their own country, they will still have the most influence, but I think declining brands abroad will mean a smaller tighter industry with only a handful of games that are of international stature. Meanwhile, I think development in Asia will become savvier with a lot of western focused development. The Namco, Capcom, or Square-Enix of China will emerge in the next five years. In ten years, a name like Shanda Interactive could be was well known as Capcom.
