It seems to me that the standard fighting game is a real waste of intellectual property. It is all well and good to have a profitable and enjoyable fighting game, but you have wasted characters and back stories (i.e. worked out storylines) that could be used.
I know most crossover games have not worked out well. Namco's "Nina" is a poster child for such games you could say for what not to do. Nevertheless, it seems so obvious that if you have a fighter the use of the character should be in a brawler...that would be redundant. The games that should be made would be adventure games, RPGs, or even action games.
Let's just take Tekken or Soul Calibur as examples. Each game has 30-40 characters most with extensive back-stories that includes life outside the 'Iron Fist Tournament' or 'the Blade of Destiny', so why not find the best one for an adventure game. In addition, every inch of those characters has been crafted…they look good, they make some sense even if just in a fighter way, and they have back-stories...they are ready to drop into other games.
- Right off the bat you could make Sophitia into a God of War game or into an ancient style Uncharted like game.
- With zero effort you could make a narrative-shooter like Bioshock with some of the spies or soldiers in Tekken.
